Mary’s Monday Musings Encouragement

Self

Ages five, four, three and two. Any outing with these four spirited children is bound to be lively. Misunderstandings and possessiveness is countered by protective gestures and loving fun, often punctuated by giggles and amusing comments. Young children offer us amazing opportunities to laugh and enjoy a lot of fun. Little ones also offer a revelation of the basic human nature before trained in the values we hold dear. We are born self-centered. That’s probably necessary so that the human species survives, yet adults who are still stuck in the self-centered stage bring heart ache to those around them at the worst or disappointment at the least.

In spite of all the reminders, cajoling, correction, and even punishment when we were small, if we are honest with ourselves, we’ll notice little pockets of self-centeredness still reside within ourselves. Let’s practice listening to our Heavenly Father when He nudges us to let go of our selfishness. With His help, we are never too old to grow and improve the way we relate to others.
