Paper Plate Art

We had to laugh when the first thing we saw displayed at a museum display of paper artwork was a display of common ordinary paper plates hung on a wall. Certainly, not what we were expecting. A closer look revealed that a series of well executed cuts and slashes created a picture that stood out because each plate was mounted on top a piece of colored paper, making the design pop out to our eyes. Beyond children’s art to hang on our refrigerator, I had never thought of such an approach as art. One of the uncomplicated pictures consisted of outlines of a house, fence, a couple of trees cut away from a paper plate. Mixed with other simple scenes were also some attractive, abstract designs.

It’s easy to forget that simple things can really be works of art in the right hands. It’s also easy to forget that in the eyes of God, what we might regard as simple and unimportant can be put to use for an impact beyond our imagination.  I’m sure all the children that saw that remarkable museum display of fancy, elaborate items, also related to those simple but attractive paper plates. Maybe those images were what the children who visited took inspiration in for their own experiments with design. Nothing is too simple or too small for God to use to advance whatever He desires in our large, complicated world. It is comforting to think God cares about the simple as well as the complicated.
