Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement

Roots

The ground is sodden. We’ve had rain, rain, rain every day this week as well as much rain over the weeks before. I’ve wondered if I should sow more grass in the low place in the lawn or release some gold fish in it. That humorous choice became less a laughing matter when a hurricane threatened our coast. Strong winds and large trees with their roots in soil turned into mud by massive doses of water makes a recipe for disaster. The last hurricane that raked our area after a season of  heavy rain resulted in hundreds of trees toppling over, root balls and all. The result was wide spread electric outages, bashed houses, and smashed cars. We prayed this week that God help our trees keep their roots firmly anchored and able to withstand the strong winds of a storm. He was gracious and moved the storm out to sea, and we are grateful our trees still stand upright.

What about my faith roots? I want my roots sunk deep and solid in faith in God in order to withstand the winds of life. What can make the ground around my faith roots, become mushy so that it does not hold me up? If I saturate myself in sights or activities that take my mind off of the love and goodness of God, I am more vulnerable to topple when the winds of difficulties blow on my life. If I water the soil of my life with a steady downpour of busyness, I weaken the grip of my roots in the substance of God’s goodness that I need for my stability. If I allow the thoughts of my mind to bombard my roots with unhealthy thoughts or thoughts of hatred, I unsettle my roots and loosen their grip on stability. Most important we can all pray and ask God to deepen our faith and anchor it firmly in His love.
