A Telephone Call

I’m still enjoying the delight of an unexpected telephone call from our first born son. How wonderful to hear his voice, exchange news, thoughts, and even philosophy. He lives in Texas so face to face conversations are infrequent. I love the timbre of his voice. It’s distinctive cadence. It’s tone. The vestiges of mirth that alters the sound when he is amused. I love his command of words. It really doesn’t matter what we talk about. What matters is that I hear his voice. Sometimes when I think into the future, I tell God that when it’s my time to die, I’d like to be able to hear all my far away sons’ voices first. Each one sounds different and each one delights my heart.

Do you suppose God enjoys our voices as much as I enjoy my sons’ voices? I think He does. After all, He created every particle that makes up each of us. Each of us has a special quality to our voice, and He knows each one. He loves for us to speak to him, and I imagine he doesn’t care what we want to talk about. He is glad when we communicate with him, regardless of the topic. Just as it’s easy to talk with someone we know well, the more we talk to God and listen for his word to our heart, the better we get to know him.  The more we converse with God, the easier spontaneous conversations  become with Him, the more natural it becomes to express our gratitude and voice our concerns throughout the day. Each communication with God keeps us anchored to our source of hope and encouragement.

Psalms 3:4 I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill.
